Balmacarra House

Balmacara is situated on the shores of Loch Alsh, approximately 3 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge, main crossing point to the Isle of Skye.
Sir Hugh Innes purchased what is now the Lochalsh Estate in 1801.

Early in his ownership, he built and lived in Balmacara House on the shores of Loch Alsh. The house, pictured in a William Daniell aquatint c1819 has since been extended considerably. Sir Alexander Matheson bought the house in the mid-19th century, and lived there while having Duncraig Castle built as his main residence. Balmacara House was then sold to Sir Daniel Hamilton and passed to the National Trust in 1947 on his widow's death
