Willie Sutherland talks about birthdays during the war.

What were the birthdays like during the war?

Birthdays like? Like any other day. And the only difference was, if it was yur birthday - there was eight of us, ye see, and there was all big families in that days - but my mother would make a cake, like a Christmas cake, ye know, and there was a sixpence put in it, ye know, and that's what ye got for yur birthday. Ye all got it, so ye all got the same. So that was the only difference on yur birthday. An' they sang 'Happy Birthday' to you - badly. [Laughter]

This interview was recorded as part of a War Detectives project in 2005 at Pennyland Primary School, Thurso.
