This postcard shows the ruins of Ballone Castle at Portmahomack in Ross-shire. The castle appears to date from the late sixteenth century and was briefly owned by the Munros of Meikle Tarrel. In 1623 it came into the hands of the Clan Mackenzie, who added buildings onto the north-east section of the castle. The fortress was later abandoned by the Mackenzies for more luxurious dwellings and it became ruinous by the 1700s
