Castle Moil and Kyleakin, Skye

The ruins of Castle Moil, or Maol overlook the small harbour at Kyleakin, once the busy landing point for the vehicle ferry from the mainland, but by-passed when the Skye Bridge was constructed in the 1990s. The remaining castle walls have been consolidated after years of neglect and storm damage resulted in the once dominating ancestral seat of the MacKinnons of Strath being greatly reduced. The present structure dates from the late 15th century, and was reputably built by a Scandinavian princess married to a MacKinnon chief. Her scheme to levy tolls from vessels passing through the strait earned her the title "Saucy Mary". This image is the fifth in a six view letter card of Skye
