Edinbane from Coshletter, Skye

A classic view of a crofting community, this postcard actually features Upper Edinbane, with each croft stretching below the house to the tidal Loch Greshornish at the foot of the hill. The small village of Edinbane lies to the right, out of shot, nestling at the head of the loch. The township was set up by Kenneth MacLeod, descended from one of the oldest families in Skye. He made his fortune in the tea and indigo plantations of India, and returned home, buying up estates including Orbost and Greshornish, and building the first hospital in Skye, Gesto Hospital, at Edinbane in 1870.
