Shore Street, Thurso

The old turnpike on Shore Street, Thurso. Shore Street is the home of many 17th and 18th century houses, although many of their original features have been hidden due to reconstruction. This two storey, round, external stair tower is a unique survival in Thurso and still remains there today.

Situated on the Pentland Firth, Thurso is the most northerly town on the Scottish mainland. It is a long established town with origins dating back to Viking times when it was an important Norse settlement, the major gateway to mainland Scotland.
