The Boys Brigade was founded in Glasgow in 1883 by Sir William Alexander Smith. It was the first uniformed youth organisation in the world. By the 1890s it had become a worldwide organisation and was followed by other similar organisations including the Girls' Brigade (1893), the Boy Scouts (1908), and the Girl Guides (1910).
