The Strathconon Valley, Muir of Ord

This postcard is titled 'The Strathconon Valley, Muir of Ord'. Strathconnon lies approximately 48 km west of Inverness.

In the mid-19th century, during the period of the Highland Clearances, several hundred people were evicted from the Strathconnon area to make way for sheep-farms, these providing greater profits to landlords than the rents of their tenants.

The arrival of the Conon Hydro-Electric Power Scheme, developed between 1946 and 1961, brought much change to this area. The building of dams on the River Meig and the River Conon resulted in the formation of the Meig Reservoir and Loch Achonachie.
