Old Keiss Castle from W., near Wick

Old Keiss Castle is located on the shoreline, approximately 1 km northeast of the village of Keiss in Caithness.

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) reports that Old Keiss Castle was probably built in the late 16th/early 17th centuries for the Earls of Caithness.

In the mid-1700s Keiss House was built further inland, as a successor to Old Keiss Castle. Between 1859 and 1862 Keiss House was significantly extended in the baronial style and was thereafter known as Keiss Castle.
