John A Matheson June 23rd, Lovat Scouts 1923

This photograph, taken on June the 23rd, 1923, shows John A. Matheson of the Lovat Scouts, posing atop his horse. A camp, no doubt belonging to the Lovat Scouts, can be seen arrayed in the background.

The Lovat Scouts were formed during the Second Boer War, as a Scottish Highland yeomanry regiment of the Territorial Army. In 1916, they became the British Army's first formal sniper unit, then known as sharpshooters. Their motto is: Je suis prest (I am ready).
