Sir John Barnard was a politician and Member of Parliament He was elected alderman of Dowgate Ward in London in 1728 and Lord Mayor of London in 1739. In the 1720s Inverness had financial problems; the Common Good Fund was broke. Sir John sorted out the finances and since then the fund has never made a loss.
