This photograph shows a view of General Hector MacDonald's birthplace in the Black Isle, Ross-Shire. Born the son of a crofter in 1853, Hector MacDonald began his military career as a private in the 92nd Gordon Highlanders. He saw action in Afghanistan which earned him a commission, a rare honour at the time. Following further distinguished service in Sudan and India, MacDonald rose to the rank of Major-General by 1900 and was knighted in 1901. In 1902 he took command of the army in Ceylon.
