Royal visit to Alness Library, 1974

A photograph of HM Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip being shown a relief map of Alness which includes the new buildings erected in the early 1970s.

In August 1974, whilst on their annual cruise round the Scottish coast on the Royal Yacht Britannia, The Queen, Prince Philip, Princes Andrew and Edward, Lady Sarah Armstrong Jones and Viscount Linley visited the Milnafua housing estate, Coulhill Primary School and the Averon Community Centre which housed a new Library.

Earlier in the day they had visited Highland Fabricators' yard at Nigg to view the launch of the platform jacket "Highland One" (a platform jacket is the part of an oil rig which sits on the sea bed and rises to sea level to support the platform).
