During the 1960s Bridge Street was widened and the original buildings demolished to make way for more contemporary architecture of the period. In 1968 some of the buildings on the left side of Bridge Street were demolished to make room for the headquarters of the Highlands and Islands Development Board. Bank Street was also affected during this period of redevelopment.
