Ackergill Tower

This print depicts Ackergill Tower.

Ackergill Tower stands on the shore of Sinclair's Bay, 3.8 km north of Wick. Dating from the late 15th century, Ackergill was considerably remodelled and extended in the baronial style by David Bryce in 1851.

When the tower house was built, the lands of Ackergill belonged to the Keiths of Inverugie. In 1612 the lands and tower were acquired by the Earl of Caithness and in 1676 by Campbell of Glenorchy, before being purchased in 1699 by Sir William Dunbar of Hempriggs. Ackergill Tower remained in the possession of that family until the 1980s.
