Scatwell and the Highland Hotel, Strathpeffer

Scatwell House in Strathconon is a 17th-century mansion which was formerly a seat of the Clan MacKenzie. The house subsequently became a hotel.

The Highland Hotel, Strathpeffer is set in its own grounds overlooking the village square. Strathpeffer grew as a Victorian spa town after the discovery of sulphurous springs in the 1770s and the coming of the railway in 1885. A number of large and grand hotels were built in Strathpeffer to accommodate visitors.

This photograph is from the book 'Picturesque Ross-shire, Strathpeffer and Dingwall' published in Dingwall, circa 1900
