This couple's clothes are typical of many crofters. Clothes were usually hand-made from tweed or wool, and linen for shirts. Women often wore a woollen plaid over their shoulders for warmth. Men wore caps and women a close-fitting linen hat called a 'mutch'. A bride would be given a mutch by her future mother-in-law on her wedding day
