Achiltibuie is the main settlement on the Coigach peninsula. The settlement is spread over about two miles on the hillside on the west coast of Badentarbat Bay. The village has spectacular views over the Summer Isles to the south west. The main industries of the whole peninsula are crofting, fishing and tourism. The Coigach peninsula and Achiltibuie did not escape the effects of the Highland Clearances and many people were cleared off the land. Until fairly recently the area was not easily accessible and this led to many of the people emigrating to the West Indies, America, Canada and Australia. The evidence of eviction and emigration can be seen in the number of ruined houses in the area like the house in the photograph
