Two barefoot children, John and Donald Currie of South Uist, are seen here making nets for their father's lobster creels.

After each fishing trip the nets were dried, checked and repaired, and dipped in preservative. This was usually done by women and children. The boy sitting down is using a special tool for mending the nets. These needles were narrow-ended shuttles made from wood or bone with a tongue to hold the cotton for mending
