Fertilising with seaweed, Skye

Seaweed was widely used as a fertiliser on croft land. The seaweed would be gathered and laid out to rot before being dug into the soil. Large piles of seaweed could also be seeded and then piled on rocky ground. This 'lazy-bed' system of creating raised beds of soil and seaweed meant that use could be made of land which would otherwise remain uncultivated
