Interior of a traditional Highland cottage

This image is from the collection of historian and folklorist Isabel F Grant and shows a woman reading by a fire.

The cooking-pot is suspended by its handle on a long hook attached to an iron chain. In Gaelic, the iron chain is known as a 'slabhraidh'. A cooking pot could be moved closer to, or further away from, the fire by adjusting the position of the long hook on the iron chain. These iron chains varied in thickness, according to the wealth of the owner. A large kettle also sits alongside the fire.
