Man with horse and cart, Lewis

This photograph shows two black houses on the island of Lewis. The black houses on Lewis had double dry stone walls with rounded corners. The house on the right has a gable end and stone chimney, which was unusual for that area . Black houses had thatched roofs which rested on the inner of the two walls and left a distinctive ledge round the outside of the house. The man standing outside the house with his horse and cart has been to collect peat from his peat stack
