Utensils found in a croft house

This photograph shows various tools and utensils that would have been found in a croft house. These include a spinning wheel and stool, a cast iron pot on a chain to be hung over the fire, and other cooking utensils. There is also a low wooden chair, which was sometimes called a creepie. Traditional croft houses had no chimney so it would be very smoky inside. The least smoky place was close to the floor, so chairs were made with short legs. The photographer, Dr I F Grant, collected many such artefacts and founded the Highland Folk Museum in Kingussie in 1944
