Croft house at Kyle of Lochalsh

Croft houses at Kyle of Lochalsh were similar to the black houses of the Western Isles and the croft houses of the central Highlands, with rounded ends, single-thickness walls and thatched roofs.

In 1819, a road was built linking the small settlement at Kyle to Inverness, via Lochcarron. Kyle then became the main ferry terminal for Skye. In 1897 the railway reached Kyle from Inverness and the village also became the ferry terminal for Stornoway until 1973, when a new terminal was built at Ullapool. In 1995 the Skye Bridge opened, ending the ferry service to Skye
