Flotilla in Fortrose Bay, c1914

A view showing the World War I flotilla of steam-powered ironclad ships in Fortrose Bay, with the wooden jetty in the foreground, taken in 1914.

Fortrose is a small burgh, located on the Moray Firth, some six miles north-east of Inverness. The town is best known for Fortrose Cathedral, which was first built in the 13th century, and became the seat of the bishopric of Ross. Much of the structure was demolished, however, during the mid-century, to provide materials for Oliver Cromwell's citadel at Inverness.
