Inverness Town House - Regimental Colours 2

This flag, the regimental colour of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, hangs in Inverness Town House, in the Main Hall.

The regiment was raised by Alan Cameron of Erracht in 1793 as the 79th Regiment of Foot (or the Cameronian Volunteers). Renamed the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders in 1873, at Queen Victoria's behest, it was the only single battalion regiment in the British army after the re-organisation of 1881 until a second battalion was raised in 1897.

In 1961 the regiment was merged with the Seaforth Highlanders to form the Queen's Own Highlanders now continued as the Highlanders, 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
