Fishing boats at Ullapool pier

Ullapool was originally established in the late 18th century as a herring port. Today the local fishing fleet catch Norway Lobsters (prawns), lobsters, scallops and crabs and the pier remains the focal point of the village.

Lobster creels are attached to ground ropes and buoys, and are baited with fish. Most of the boats fish all the year round and return to port on a daily basis. Refrigerated lorries transport the bulk of the catches to local processors and from there on to European markets
