The Campbell Family, Dornie, Coigach

The family in this photograph owned a general merchants business in Dornie, Coigach, north of Achiltibuie, known locally as Dornie Shop (the family were known as Campbell Dornie). Pictured, standing from left to right, is Jessie Campbell, Jessie's mother, her brother John and her younger sister, Bella. Seated is another brother, George.

The shop was attached to their house. The family also looked after a croft and fished. Three other sisters lived and worked in the west of Scotland and Glasgow area. The shop was owned by the family for 120 years and it was thought to be one of the earliest shops in Ross-shire to give credit. It closed in the late 1960s (probably in 1968) shortly after the death of John.

None of the seven Campbells ever married.
