Schooner Penola at Isle Martin

This photograph shows the Penola, a three-masted schooner, landing supplies on the pier at Isle Martin. The schooner was owned by Commander Vyner, landowner of Isle Martin.

A flour mill existed on the island until the late 1940s and wheat for the mill was shipped in from Liverpool on the schooner. The flour was then distributed to bakeries throughout the North of Scotland. Before her role as a goods ship, the Penola was an Antarctic expedition ship for the British Graham Land Expedition 1934-37.
