Old man winnowing oats

This photo shows an old man winnowing oats near the shore at Ardmair, Lochbroom. Winnowing is the process of separating the chaff from the grain. The oats would usually be put into a winnowing basket thrown in the air. The wind, either a natural breeze or one created by flapping a sheet, would blow the lighter chaff away and leave the grain to fall back into the basket.
