Herring drifters berthed at pier, Ullapool

This photograph shows herring drifters berthed at the pier, Ullapool. The boat at the front is the Lily Oak. The two men that are seated are dressed in tight jerseys and dark blue trousers. The man to the right wears a yellow oilskin jacket with white thigh boots. In the background a lorry prepares for transportation of the fish.

Ullapool was developed as a fishing station in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society. Every season boats and herring gutters would arrive from all over Scotland. The herring industry declined in the 1930s and the processing became more centralized on the east coast although boats continued to fish on the west coast.
