This extract is from a letter to the 'Scottish Highlander', dated 6th November 1889, from Neil Calder, former Secretary of the Creich Branch of the Land League, Gainesville, Texas.

The extract is read by Gilleasbuig Ferguson.

'Nuair a bha mi a' siubhal bho chionn ghoirid ann an Oklahoma, cha b' urrainn dhomh gun a bhith a' smaoineachadh air an t-suidheachadh uabhasach anns an robh mòran dhaoine nuair a thàinig iad dhan dùthaich seo an toiseach. Bha feadhainn gus an tolladh leis an acras ... Tha mi air na daoine bochda seo fhaicinn gun bhrògan air an casan, gun aodach gu leòr air an cuirp agus iad deònach obair a dhèanamh an asgaidh. Gun glèidh Dia mi gun an leithid seo a dh'fhulangas fhaicinn am measg dhaoine gu sìorraidh tuilleadh.'

The English reads:

'While I was travelling over the recently opened up country of Oklahoma, in the Indian territory, I could not but think upon the miserable and dilapidated condition the majority of the people that flocked into that country were placed in, some of the verge of starvation ... I have actually seen those poor people work without a shoe upon their feet, or clothes enough to cover their skin, and willing to work for mere nothing. May God preserve me from seeing humanity suffer to such an extent again!'

This audio was produced for the schools' resource package, 'Highlanders on the Move', Am Baile's contribution to Homecoming Scotland 2009.
