This is the text of an undated cutting from the Inverness Courier in a volume of historical pamphlets collected by James Maidment (Vol.1, p.74) The volume forms part of the reference collection at Inverness Library.

The extract is from a letter written by Margaret McLeod of Melbourne, Australia, to her brother and sister back home in Skye.

The extract is read by Morag MacNeill.

'Tha Ruairidh ag obair ann an ceàrdaich anns a' bhaile agus a' faighinn trì notaichean agus sia tastain gach seachdain; tha Dòmhnall ag obair ann am bùth liomainèid agus tha esan a' faighinn trì notaichean san t-seachdain; tha Aonghas ag obair ann an taigh-seinnse agus a' faighinn not agus còig tastain gach seachdain agus a bhiadh a bharrachd air a sin. Tha obair gu leòr an seo dhan h-uile duine a tha ag iarraidh obair.'

The English reads:

'Roderick is working in a smithy in town and getting £3, 6s a week; and Donald is in a lemonade shop and is getting £3 a week; and Angus is working in a public house and getting £1 5s a week, along with rations. There is plenty of work here for every person that will work.'

This audio was produced for the schools' resource package, 'Highlanders on the Move', Am Baile's contribution to Homecoming Scotland 2009.
