This is the text of an undated cutting from the Inverness Courier in a volume of historical pamphlets collected by James Maidment (Vol.1, p.74) The volume forms part of the reference collection at Inverness Library.

The extract is from a letter written by Margaret McLeod of Melbourne, Australia, to her brother and sister back home in Skye.

The extract is read by Sarah Fraser.

'B' fheàrr leam gun tigeadh tu fhèin agus Mairead a-mach an seo oir dhèanadh sibh le chèile gu math. Dh'fhaodadh Mairead nigheadaireachd a dhèanamh. Gheibheadh i h-ochd tastain airson gach dusan a ghlanadh i.'

The English reads:

'I wish that you and Margaret would take the courage to come out here, for you would both do very well. Margaret would do very well in washing. She would get 8s for every dozen she would wash and dress.'

This audio was produced for the schools' resource package, 'Highlanders on the Move', Am Baile's contribution to Homecoming Scotland 2009.
