In this audio extract, Nellie Geddes talks about her childhood in Lybster, where she grew up in a fishing family. She describes how children went barefoot in the summer months and valued boots, footwear they often did not receive until their father came home from the herring fishing in Yarmouth in December. It was the custom for herring fishermen from Caithness to go south to join the herring fishing off Yarmouth in the late autumn, after the Caithness herring fishing finished for the year.
