In this audio extract Alistair Tait recalls Christmas Treats and other forms of entertainment in rural Caithness.

Many rural schools hosted a Christmas Treat in the 1950s and into the 1960s. The schoolchildren put on a programme of songs, sketches and recitations for parents and other adults. The concerts were always well attended. The climax was an appearance by Santa Claus who distributed gifts to all the children. Some treats were followed by dances.
