Caithness resident, Mr George Sutherland, was born in 1907 into a crofting or farming environment.

In this audio extract from the 1980s, he talks about the back delivery and the binder, horse-drawn harvesting machinery. He describes how sheaves were stooked, and the orientation of the stooks for maximum drying by the wind. He also describes how farm servants were paid in kind as well as in cash - by being provided with meal, potatoes and fuel.
