Daniel Swanson of Thurso claimed to be one of the inventors of the aeroplane.

The Caithness Courier reported on his death that "During the Boer War he suggested that the aeroplane be used for dropping bombs on the enemy, but it was thought to be too barbarous. ....... he also had an idea of an automatic buffer for aeroplanes, so that when anything went wrong with the engines, instead of being crashed on striking the ground there would only be a slight rebound."
