Skye Crofters

This is a very common photograph which was first used for the MacLaine Postcards Series. Entitled 'Skye Crofters', it is often found in postcard books. Neither the precise location or the identity of the people in it are known.

The photograph was taken in the latter part of the 19th century. The photograph illustrates the hardship of daily life for the common people of the Hebrides. Making a living from the small parcels of croft land, or from fishing, provided them with only the most meagre existence. Their clothing and footwear appear well worn. Their stone croft house, with thatched roof, was probably perfectly functional but with few, if any, comforts of the day.
