Anna Mhor, Balmacara

The original of this photograph was taken by Duncan Macpherson of Kyle of Lochalsh and is titled Anna Mhor, Balmacara.

This photograph is one of Macpherson's 'character' photos and was published in the Kyle Pharmacy Series. Macpherson produced a number of these images in postcard form for the tourist trade with the emphasis on the romanticised view of the Highlands rather than a realistic one.

Macpherson's original postcard is simply captioned Anna Mhor, Balmacara. Subsequent publications of this photograph as pictured have the different caption, Anna Mhor, Cul t-saoghail (Big Anne, Back of the World, Balmacara), Kyle. It is likely that this photograph was taken at Kirkton, near Kyle of Lochalsh.

Macpherson ran the Chemist's shop in Kyle from 1912 to 1966. He was also a very enthusiastic photographer. Seldom venturing out without his camera, he was always ready to capture the daily comings and goings of the area. His chemist shop carried all the equipment and supplies necessary for local and visiting amateur photographers, and Macpherson also produced postcards and publications for sale in the shop.
