Somerled Macdonald was born at Orbost, Isle of Skye in August 1868, third son of Lachlan Macdonald of Orbost.

Macdonald studied art in London and Paris. He was well-known for his paintings of Highland scenes and for his portraits.

Macdonald also studied bagpipe music and was a notable performer, winning several prizes at the Scottish Piping Society's championships.

Somerled Macdonald died on 26 March 1948.
