This letter was written by Donald Walter Cameron of Lochiel at Maida Barracks, Aldershot, to Lady Hermione Cameron at 4 Carlton Terrace, Edinburgh on 31 October 1914. Lochiel was waiting to be mobilised. The letter comprises two pages. The following is a transcript of the parts which relate to the war:

...think of you when I wear it.
I am dining with Sir Archibald Hunter
[General Sir Archibald Hunter 1856 – 1936] tonight so must not be late. Colonel Repington of the Times [Colonel Charles à Court Repington 1858 – 1925, former Army officer and war correspondent] was here today so do read what he says about us.

Please answer Aunt Julia’s letter. The submarine at Invergordon was a whale!

I am awfully sorry about Robert Bruce.

I hear Geoffrey Fielding is killed also Hugh Fraser & Colley in the Grenadiers. Who will be left.
