Cameron of Lochiel to Lady Hermione Cameron, 3 November 1914 (2 of 2)

This letter was written by Donald Walter Cameron of Lochiel at Maida Barracks, Aldershot, to Lady Hermione Cameron at 4 Carlton Terrace, Edinburgh on 3 November 1914. Lochiel was waiting to be mobilised. The letter comprises two pages. The following is a transcript of the parts which relate to the war:

…suffered terribly, 9 officers …or wounded. The 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, 6 officers & 340 men left.

Hugh Fraser is killed & I hear a dreadful rumour that Angus Mackintosh is killed. Every single fellow seems to be killed or wounded. I hear Barber is killed in our own 3rd Battalion.

Uncle K
[William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch 1831–1914. Lochiel’s maternal uncle] is I am afraid dying. He is gradually sinking from heart failure.

[Remainder of letter is purely family and social news]
