Red Cross Tennis Tournament, Thurso, 1917

The Red Cross Tennis Tournament was a charity event aimed at raising money for the Red Cross.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was founded in 1863. A Swiss businessman, Henry Dunant, proposed the creation of national relief societies, made up of volunteers, to provide neutral and impartial help to relieve the suffering of people in times of war. Durant also proposed the original Geneva Convention in 1864.
The British Red Cross was founded in 1870. It was originally called the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War.

Situated on the Pentland Firth in the sheltered Thurso Bay, Thurso is the most northerly town on the Scottish mainland. Thurso is a long established town with origins dating back to Viking times when it was an important Norse settlement and the major gateway to mainland Scotland.
