Grain Mill ruins, Achmelvich

The ruins of a grain mill, visible to the right, at Achmelvich.

Entitled Alltan'abrahan, the grain mill is surrounded by several old mill stones, which were formally turned by means of a horizontal paddle.

Achmelvich is located approximately 5 kilometres north along the coast from Lochinver in Sutherland. Made up of a series of small, stunning beaches, convenient accommodation can be found in the nearby youth hostel, as well as at the camping and caravan park.

Aside from the beach, the 'Hermit's castle' is another local highlight, often arousing curiosity and incredulity in equal measure. Built by David Scott, an English architect, in the 1950s, some have claimed it to be Europe's smallest castle. Today, it is occasionally used as a bothy by travellers.
