Presentation of the BEM to William Gunn of Wick

This photograph commemorates the presentation of the British Empire Medal to William Gunn, Wick, at the Dounreay Nuclear Power Station.

The Dounreay Dome was the first Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor to produce electricity for the national grid. It was constructed between 1955 and 1958. Until its closure in 1977 it played an important part in the world's fast reactor research by developing fuel designs, coolant technology, efficient reprocessing and nuclear waste management.
