Fishermen at John o' Groats

A photograph of two small boats in the harbour at John o' Groats. One of the boats has one mast, whilst the second boat has two.

John o' Groats is a village in the Highlands of Scotland. It is popular with tourists because it is regarded by many as being the most northerly settlement of mainland Great Britain. However, this is actually at nearby Dunnet Head.

The town takes its name from Jan de Groot, a Dutchman who obtained a grant for the ferry from the Scottish mainland to Orkney, recently acquired from Norway, from King James IV in 1496.
