War Memorial at Elwick, Shapinsay, Orkney

Shapinsay is one of the Orkney Islands off the north coast of mainland Scotland, accessible by a short sea journey from Kirkwall. During the 18th and 19th centuries the island was dominated by the Balfour family. Balfour village was built toward the end of the 18th century as a home for estate workers. Much of this green and fertile island is given over to agriculture. Shapinsay is also known for its wildlife.
