Traill Street, Thurso

Traill Street in Thurso's 'new town' was named after James Traill of Rattar (1758-1847), Sheriff of Caithness and the man responsible for the development of the Caithness flagstone industry. The statue seen to the left of the image is Thurso's War Memorial.

Situated on the Pentland Firth in the sheltered Thurso Bay, Thurso is the most northerly town on the Scottish mainland. Thurso is a long established town with origins dating back to Viking times when it was an important Norse settlement and the major gateway to mainland Scotland.
