The village of Shieldaig, located on the south-eastern extent of Loch Gairloch, on the west coast of the Highlands, was founded at the turn of the eighteenth century. It was initially founded to provide a training ground for seaman to crew against the French during the Napoleonic Wars. However, after Napoleon's defeat and exile, the village settled into a small fishing community, which it has remained until the present day.
